Article from my Dad- Kendall Verbrugge

From time to time, my dad sends me articles about everything under the sun. Some are about politics (most of those I skip or skim because I am not big into that subject), some are about religion and some are about social media. Earlier this semester he sent me one that caught my eye. The title is "Of Tattoos and Stigmata" by Fr. Thomas G. Weinandy. The article states that tattoos are ungodly and it gives multiple reasons not to get them. Wienandy states that people find themselves unsatisfied with the way God made them and therefore need to cover up their skin with ugly marks. He makes a very clear statement that this generation will regret tattoos as skin ages and becomes "saggy" and unappealing, and believes that when we become older, the need for pants and long sleeve shirts will become necessary and popular. He also goes on to relate this topic to Jesus and some apostles, however I would like to give my opinion on the first section of this article. I believe that tattoos are an expression of who one is. I do believe that there are very extreme measures that are taken on occasions, as in one getting a "blackout" tattoo, or going so far as to add implants into their skin, but besides that, there is a certain beauty that tattoos bring. I believe that it is not coving up what God made, but using it to enhance or bring beauty to what you look like. I do understand how one could try and cover up what they see with a tattoo, but once again I disagree. A tattoo can inspire confidence in covering scärs, or showing the world what you believe. It makes me think about plastic surgery. Not things like BBLs or liposuction, but surgery to fix a cleft pallet or some other birth defect. Surgery may be necessary for things like that, but if we go along with that this article says, we are supposed to embrace and "keep" that unique side of us. I have absolutely no problem with plastic surgery and I am probably going too deep into this subject, however I do feel strongly about tattoos. I currently am saving up money to get one- a simple flower or cross on my arm, along with plans for some other small ones throughout my body. I do not believe that getting a tattoo is bad or evil, but I do see how people can go overboard and change their whole self with tattoos. I found this article fascinating and would definitely recommend reading it! I love having these kinds of conversations with my dad as well, and I love getting articles from him.
