Image and Pilgrimage- Kendall Verbrugge

In chapter 2 of Image and Pilgrimage in Christian Culture, an interesting claim is made. It says "pilgrimage lives in Mexico." I never ever thought that pilgrimage was huge in Mexico. I always assumed Jerusalem or Spain had the largest amount of pilgrimage. However, after a quick google search, it looks like in the last year, over 2 million people went on a pilgrimage to a certain spot in Mexico, and even more went to other spots in Mexico. After another google search, it looks like only a couple hundred thousand people made their way to a pilgrimage in Spain and only about a million people visit Israel in a year. This information astounds me. I have really only considered the places we have talked about in class to be the most popular pilgrimage places. I am taking away a lesson from this new information: never assume. My assumption gave me false information. I love learning new things, especially this kind of information, because it sparks my interest to travel and see new things in the world.
