Samuel Williams Blog Reflection on Image and Pilgrimage in Christian Culture

Blog Reflection on Image and Pilgrimage in Christian Culture: November 15th, 2022

After reading the second chapter of this book, I learned something very interesting. In the book, Image and Pilgrimage in Christian Culture, written by Victor Turner and Edith L.B Turner, I learned just how big the idea of christian pilgrimage is in Mexico. I would have thought places like Spain or Portugal would have a bigger christian pilgrimage culture, but what surprised me was Mexico's significance with this whole idea. In the second chapter of this book, this whole idea comes further into detail. As stated in the second paragraph of the second chapter on page 40, “Pilgrimage lives in Mexico”. At first, I was surprised. However the more I thought about it, the more it did make sense. I did remember reading something a while ago about the heavy christian presence in Mexico. In addition, when I visited Cancun as a teenager, I did remember seeing lots of religious symbols and elements. I saw lots of religious statues and symbols, churches, and locations that were considered sacred sights that were connected to a saint. Reading further into the chapter, the whole significance with Mexico and christian pilgrimages was explained further. Turns out, millions of people from across the globe travel to Mexico every year to go on sacred pilgrimages to extremely religious sights across the country. They travel to view everything from shrines to churches to statues. After reading the chapter, I learned so much about how Mexico is actually one of the countries with a huge amount of religious significance.
